Yesterday I discovered an interesting quirk in the City of Yellowknife’s property assessment system. If you own a house downtown and you use it purely for residential purposes, your land will be assessed at $95,000. But if you choose to operate a business out of your home, your assessment jumps up to $210,000. If you have purchased a home in the downtown area in the last seven years and you don’t currently have a business license attached to it, check your assessment. If it’s at $210,000, get in touch with the City.
