Frequently Asked Questions

How do I obtain my license?

The Northwest Territories does not have its own real estate licensing course, so Realtors must complete the equivalent course from one of the provinces.  Here is a link to the Alberta course, as an example.

Is there room for more Realtors in Yellowknife?

Yes. Yellowknife has one of the lowest ratios of Realtors to residents in Canada.  There are currently 18 active Realtors in Yellowknife and a population of about 22,000.  That works out to 1,210 residents per Realtor.  Here is how we stack up against other cities in terms of population per Realtor:

  • Yellowknife: 1,210
  • Whitehorse: 523
  • Grande Prairie: 316
  • Nanaimo: 189
  • Kelowna: 124

How do I pick a brokerage?

Brokerages differ in their corporate cultures, the tools they provide to ensure the success of their Realtors, in their training programs, their business models (i.e. will you have to compete for business with your own broker?) and compensation packages.  They are as different as the homes you'll be selling to your clients.  The best way to be sure of the right fit is to sit down with all of them, meet the people you'll be working with every day, and develop a detailed understanding of their distinct value propositions.

Do I need to to sign up with a brokerage before getting my license?

Not necessarily, but it is advisable.  If you complete your licensing course but don't sign up with a brokerage within two years, your credentials will expire and you'll have to take the course again.

What is the best background for a career in real estate?
